We Need to Protect Children from Accidents in and Around the Water

You should look at the following precautions and keep them in mind to protect children from dangers related to swimming and the water:

1 When it looks like it is about to rain, or after it has rained, don’t let your children go to anyplace near the water.

2 There are places, such as some lakes, that prohibit swimming.  Make sure your children don’t swim in such dangerous places.

3 Don’t let your children go anywhere near the water unless they are supervised by an adult.

4 If you are on a family outing, be sure not to leave small children unsupervised.

5 If you see children playing somewhere dangerous, please warn them to stay away from there.

Be Careful About Heat Stroke in June as Well

From May to October of last year, 145 people in Akashi had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance because of heatstroke.

We are now entering Japan’s “rainy season”, where it rains quite often.  If there is a lot of humidity in the air, it is easy to get heatstroke even when the temperature is not all that high.

In order to avoid heatstroke,

  • Use the air conditioner to reduce the temperature and humidity in the air.
  • Wear comfortable clothing or clothes that will absorb sweat.
  • Be sure to drink fluids before you start to feel thirsty.
  • Try to do some kind of exercise as part of your daily routine so you can work up a sweat.
  • Eat at regular times and get plenty of sleep.

If you think you or someone with you may have heatstroke,

  • Rest in a cool place.
  • Drink liquids.  If you can, add a little bit of salt to water or tea.  Sports drinks have both salt and minerals in them, so they are an even better option.
  • If someone you’re with has heatstroke and is no longer able to speak, call an ambulance immediately.
