The People of Akashi Have Chosen “The Treasures of Akashi”

In January of this year, the citizens of Akashi were asked how they felt about the city.  Various examples were given in the three categories of “Foods”, “Places”, and “The City’s Image.”  The people were asked to choose their picks from each of the categories.  The results were tallied to see what was the most popular.  In the end, the food Akashi-yaki was voted for by the most people.

Here are the results for the top three:

1st place: Akashi-yaki

2nd place: “A town where it is easy to raise a family”

3rd place: Akashi Castle

It has been 10 years since Akashi city first started sending out this survey, and this year’s survey was the 4th one.

For the 3rd time in a row, Akashi-yaki got 1st place.  However, the difference in votes between 1st and 2nd place was not very large at all.  Which means that to the people of Akashi, the food “Akashi-yaki” and the image “A town where it is easy to raise a family” are the most common things that come to mind when they think about their city.

You Can Try Wearing Historical Japanese Clothing

At the Akashi Cultural Museum, you can have a chance to try on one of two different historical Japanese outfits: either a “junihitoe” or a set of samurai armor.  A “junihitoe” is a gorgeous outfit that women in Japan wore around 1,000 years ago.  The name means “twelve layers”, because the outfit was like a kimono with 12 different layers of fabric.  The armor you can wear is the heavy iron armor that the samurai would wear into battle.  Please look at these images of the outfits.

Anyone who is of junior high school age or older can apply to wear the junihitoe.  Everyone is free to apply to wear the armor.

These outfits can be worn on the 2nd Thursday and the 4th Sunday of April, May, June, and July.  There are two available times to wear the outfit on each of those days: from 1:00 pm and from 1:40 pm.  For each of these times, only two people will be able to wear the junihitoe and samurai armor.  If too many people apply for the event, then a lottery will be held to decide who can participate.

Please apply by March 20th.

You can apply either by using the QR code, a fax, or by sending in a postcard.  If you apply by postcard, please be sure that it arrives at the Akashi Cultural Museum by March 20th.  Also, please be sure to write down the following things on the postcard:

•Which outfit you want to wear: the junihitoe or the armor
•The day when you want to wear the outfit
•Your name, age, address, and telephone number
