Be Extra Careful About Food Poisoning in August

“Food poisoning” is when the food you eat ends up making you sick.  It’s especially common in summer, because it’s easy for a lot of germs to grow in your food.  To avoid coming down with food poisoning, please take a look at the following points of advice:

◎Be careful to avoid any germs that cause food poisoning touching your food.

・Thoroughly and carefully wash your hands and any kitchen utensils or items that come in contact with food.

・If you use kitchen utensils with raw meat or fish, be sure not to use them with any other food.

◎Be careful about safe food preservation.

・After you buy food, be sure to put it in the refrigerator or freezer as soon as possible.

・Be sure to keep your refrigerator at 10℃ or colder, and your freezer at -15℃ or colder.

◎Be careful about cooking food.

・The germs that cause food poisoning are killed if the food is cooked properly.

・ When cooking meat and fish, be very careful that they have been cooked all the way to the center.

Watch Out for Poisonous Mushrooms

There are many kinds of mushrooms.  Some are edible, and some are inedible.  When you are outdoors (for example, hiking in the mountains), you may come across some mushrooms and want to try eating them.  But if those mushrooms are poisonous, eating them could be extremely dangerous.

Poisonous mushrooms can make you feel nauseous or give you an upset stomach.  They can even paralyze your body and make you unable to move.  In the worst case, eating a poisonous mushroom can kill you.  These poisonous mushrooms often look similar to safe, edible mushrooms.  That is why you should be very careful.

When you find wild mushrooms, please obey the following points:

 •     Don’t harvest them.

 •     Don’t eat them.

 •     Don’t sell them.

 •     Don’t give them to other people.
