Be On Guard and Prepared for Natural Disasters
Japan is entering a season where typhoons are much more common. Preparing for and thinking about what to do if a natural disaster strikes is “disaster preparedness.” September 1st is “Disaster Preparedness Day” in Japan. Please think about the ways you can protect yourself and your family against any natural disasters, such as earthquake, tsunamis, and floods. As a family, get prepared for any disaster that might happen.

A “hazard map” is a map that shows what areas are potentially dangerous during a typhoon, earthquake, or other natural disaster. In 2022, Akashi City sent a “Akashi City Hazard Map” to every household in Akashi. Be sure to look over the hazard map together with your family, and think about the following things:
•Confirm what places on the map are dangerous, and what places are safe.
•Confirm where you need to evacuate in case of a disaster, and what route you should use to get there.
•Decide on a “meeting place” so that you and your family can meet there in case you are in different places when a disaster happens.
You can look over the Akashi City Hazard Map using the QR code on the right.

② Prepare necessary supplies, such as water and food.
If an earthquake or typhoon happens, electricity, gas, or water may be cut off. You may not be able to use them at all, which will make life more difficult that it would be if they were running normally. In order to prepare you and your family for that possibility, you should prepare some necessities in advance. For example, the items on the following list are good things to have ready in case of an emergency. Prepare enough food and water so that your family will have enough for at least 3 days.
•Water: Three liters is about how much one adult will drink in one day, so consider this when stocking up on water.
•Food: Prepare food that will stay edible for a long time and can be kept ready for use in a bag. For example, foods like rice, dried instant rice (called “alpha rice”, アルファ米, in Japanese), canned food, cup noodles, instant food in a pouch (called “retort meals”, レトルト食品, in Japanese), sweets, etc.
•Portable gas stove and gas canisters to fuel it
•Flashlight, batteries, portable battery charger
