Be Especially Careful About Children Getting Heatstroke
In summer, not only is the temperature of the air very hot, but the ground is extremely hot as well. Because children are closer to the ground, it is even easier for them to get heatstroke. To prevent children coming down with heatstroke, adults should keep the following points in mind:
[Tell children to be sure and drink water]
Often, children will be so absorbed in playing that they will forget to drink water regularly. Be sure to talk to your children at regular intervals and tell them to drink water.
[Make sure children eat meals that help build strong and healthy bodies for summer]
It’s especially good for children to eat summer vegetables or soups.
Summer vegetables that contain lots of moisture to keep kids hydrated and their body temperature lower → Cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, etc.
Vegetables that have lots of vitamins to help replenish those lost by kids who have been sweating a lot → Edamame, green peppers, etc.
[Check on children to make sure that they are doing all right]
Sometimes, even when children aren’t feeling well, they may not be able to express that to you very well. So you may not realize unless you check yourself.
Adults should check on children regularly to make sure that (for example) their faces aren’t red, they aren’t sweating excessively, etc.
- Even inside of a stroller, it can get very hot, so please be careful and keep an eye out on the child sitting inside.
- The inside of a stopped car can get dangerously hot. Please be careful never to leave any children sitting alone in a stopped car.

Beware of Food Poisoning
August is an especially dangerous month for food poisoning!
In order to prevent it, please look at the following three pieces of advice:
1. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands, food, and any cooking or kitchen utensils.
- Before cooking or eating food, carefully wash your hands with soap and water.
- Be sure to thoroughly wash vegetables before you eat them.
- For any cooking utensils you will use to make food, be sure to wash them with dishwasher detergent and disinfect them.
- If you use a knife or cutting board for raw meat or fish, be sure not to use them with any other food.
2. Be careful about preserving food.
- After you buy food, be sure to put it in the refrigerator or freezer as quickly as possible.
- For refrigerated food, put it in the refrigerator. For frozen food, put it in the freezer.
- The refrigerator should be kept at 10 degrees Celsius or colder. The freezer should be kept at -15 degrees Celsius or colder.
3. Be sure to cook food thoroughly.
- The bacteria that cause food poisoning are killed by heat.
- Cook meat or fish so that the center of it reaches a temperature of 75 degrees Celsius or higher for at least 1 minute.
- When cooking food in the microwave, make sure that everything has been thoroughly heated up.
